Don’t Let Bedbugs Ruin The Sleepover: 3 Tips To Prevent Infestations

Summer will be here in no time at all. If you've got school-aged kids, that means they'll be done with school before you know it. If they're like most kids, they'll want to fill their summer with plenty of sleep-overs. That can be a real problem when it comes to bedbugs. You don't want to deal with a bedbug infestation, but you don't want to deprive your kids of time with their friends. Instead of saying no to having sleepovers at your home this summer, take the following precautions to prevent bedbugs from invading your space.

Keep the Party in One Room

If you want to protect your home from a bedbug infestation, the best thing you can do is limit the party to one room of the house – preferably one without beds. Invite guests to bring their own sleeping bags and have them camp out in the family room. That way, kids have access to things like televisions and game systems, without traveling through the whole house. This will ensure that any bugs, remain in one room.

Cover the Mattresses

If your kid's sleep-over guests are going to be using the beds in your home, take precautions to protect the mattresses. The best way to do that is to place your mattresses in protective coverings. Plastic bedcovers will prevent bedbugs from making their way into the mattress fibers. Once your guests go home, carefully remove the covers and place them in plastic bag for disposal. It's also a good idea to spray the mattresses with a bleach solution. Fill a spray bottle with water and add about ½ cup of bleach. Spray the mattresses and allow the solution to dry. The bleach solution will help kill any bugs that might be lingering in the fibers.

Vacuum Thoroughly

Once your kid's sleepover is over, you'll need to do a thorough cleaning, especially of the carpeted flooring or upholstered furniture. First, vacuum the furniture, including under the cushions. When you're done vacuuming the furniture, empty the vacuum cleaner dirt container in the outside trash can before vacuuming the rest of the room. This will prevent the transfer of bugs from your furniture to the carpeting. Finally, vacuum the carpeting thoroughly and then empty the dirt collector again.

If your kids are going to be having sleepovers with their friends this summer, you can prevent bedbug infestations by following the tips provided here. If you do happen to encounter a bedbug infestation, be sure to contact a pest control company near you.
